Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

Author Michelle Knight

Michelle Knight, founder of Black Moms Reality Bookcase LLC, is an Army veteran whose journey from military service to children's literature embodies resilience and purpose. With a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration, coupled with over 20 years in healthcare, Michelle brings a unique perspective to children's literature.

Her motto, 'Reading reality is essential assisting our children today for a better tomorrow,' stems from her belief that life experience is the most valuable degree one can earn. Through her collection of multicultural children's books, she addresses real-life challenges while celebrating African American culture and inspiring young minds to dream big.

Black Moms Reality Bookcase was born from Michelle's passion for teaching through writing. Each book carries powerful messages that help children aged 3-12 navigate life's challenges while seeing themselves represented in literature. As an author and educator, she creates stories that serve as bridges to understanding, growth, and empowerment.

Available for: • School readings and author visits • Writing workshops • Professional development • Speaking engagements • One-on-one author coaching

Every book is personally signed, making each reader's journey special.

Because even the thinnest books can carry the mightiest messages."

Our Story

Growing up, I often found myself longing for guidance—wishing someone had taught me the life lessons I desperately needed. I wasn’t always told how valuable I was, how to navigate emotions, or that being different wasn’t something to hide, but something to celebrate.

Determined to build a better future for myself, I joined the military, where I learned discipline, strength, and perseverance. Later, I earned a degree in psychology, deepening my understanding of human behavior, trauma, and the importance of emotional well-being—especially in children.

As I watched the next generation grow up in a fast-paced, often unforgiving world, I knew they needed the very lessons I once lacked. I made a promise to myself:
If I ever had the chance to pour into young people—to help them see their worth and walk a little stronger into their future—I would. Writing became my chance.

Creating Black Moms Reality Bookcase became my platform.

Through stories, affirmations, and meaningful characters, I strive to give children the encouragement, confidence, and emotional support I once needed. I never want a child to feel alone, ashamed, used, or like they don’t belong. I want them to know:

You are special.
You are worthy.
You are uniquely, perfectly, imperfectly designed.

At Black Moms Reality Bookcase, we create more than just books—we create safe spaces, healing stories, and empowering tools to help children believe in who they are and all they can become.

This isn’t just a brand.
It’s a mission, born from a childhood wish, lived through real-world experience, and now fulfilled one story at a time.

Heaven B. Smith, born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, never imagined she would write her first book at just twelve years old. Her love for writing blossomed as she watched her older brothers and sisters pursue college and military service. Inspired by their paths and her own unique place in the family,

Heaven penned "Reasons I Don't Like Being the Baby"—a heartfelt reflection on the ups and downs of being the youngest of six. Sometimes, being the baby of the family can be just as challenging as being an only child.

Riding the wave of her success as a best-selling author, Heaven went on to create a thoughtful journal designed especially for young queens. This empowering tool helps girls express their emotions, build self-confidence, and strengthen their literacy skills.

We’re excited to see what the future holds for Ms. Smith—and we know she’s just getting started.
